How to Blur Images Online

SmarterSources' image blur tool lets you apply blur effects to any image directly in your browser. Select a specific area to blur — like a face, license plate, or sensitive text — or blur the entire image for creative effects. You have precise control over the blur type and intensity.

Selective Area Blur

Click and drag on your image to draw a rectangle around the area you want to blur. Resize or reposition the selection using the corner and edge handles. The blur applies in real time so you can see exactly what the result will look like before downloading.

Gaussian Blur

Gaussian blur creates a smooth, natural-looking blur effect. It's perfect for softening backgrounds, creating depth-of-field effects, or reducing noise. Adjust the intensity slider to control how strong the blur appears.

Pixelation

Pixelation breaks the image into larger pixel blocks, creating a mosaic effect. This is ideal for hiding faces, license plates, or other sensitive information in screenshots and photos. Higher intensity means larger pixels.

Privacy First

All processing happens in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images never leave your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I blur just part of the image?

Yes! Select "Selected Area" mode (the default), then click and drag on your image to draw a rectangle around the area you want to blur. You can resize and reposition the selection using the handles. Only the selected area will be blurred in the downloaded image.

What's the difference between gaussian blur and pixelation?

Gaussian blur smoothly blends neighboring pixels together, creating a soft, out-of-focus look. Pixelation replaces groups of pixels with a single color block, creating a distinct mosaic pattern.

Can I blur multiple areas?

You can blur one area at a time. To blur multiple areas, download the image after blurring the first area, then re-upload it and blur the next area. Each pass preserves the previous blur.

Can I undo the blur?

You can adjust the intensity and selection at any time — the blur is always applied to the original image, not cumulatively. Just move the slider or redraw the selection to try different levels. Click "Start Over" to go back to the original.

Is the blurred area truly hidden?

Yes. Both gaussian blur and pixelation permanently remove detail from the affected pixels in the downloaded image. The original data cannot be recovered from the blurred output.
