Free Online Grade Calculator
Our free grade calculator helps students and teachers quickly determine grade percentages, letter grades, and GPA equivalents. Whether you need a simple points-earned calculation or a weighted grade with multiple categories like homework, exams, and projects, this tool makes it easy. Everything runs in your browser with no sign-up required.
How Is Your Grade Calculated?
In simple mode, your grade percentage is calculated by dividing the points you earned by the total points possible, then multiplying by 100. For example, earning 87 out of 100 points gives you an 87%, which is a B+ (3.3 GPA). In weighted mode, each category (homework, exams, projects, etc.) has a weight percentage. Your final grade is the sum of each category's percentage multiplied by its weight. For instance, if homework is worth 30% and you scored 90%, and exams are worth 70% and you scored 80%, your weighted grade would be (0.30 x 90) + (0.70 x 80) = 27 + 56 = 83%, a B.
Understanding Letter Grades and GPA
The standard American grading scale maps percentage ranges to letter grades and GPA values. An A (93-100%) corresponds to a 4.0 GPA, while a B (83-86%) equals a 3.0. Plus and minus modifiers provide finer distinctions. For example, a B+ (87-89%) carries a 3.3 GPA, while a B- (80-82%) carries a 2.7. This calculator uses the most common grading scale used by colleges and universities in the United States.
Simple vs. Weighted Grading
Simple grading treats all points equally. If an assignment is worth 50 points and a final exam is worth 200 points, the exam naturally has more impact because it has more points. Weighted grading assigns each category a percentage of the final grade regardless of point values. This is common in college courses where a syllabus might list "Homework: 20%, Midterm: 30%, Final: 40%, Participation: 10%."
Tips for Students
Use this calculator at the start of the semester to understand how each category affects your final grade. If exams are worth 60% of your grade, you know where to focus your effort. Use it throughout the semester to track your progress and set realistic goals. If you are entering the final exam, plug in your current grades and experiment with different exam scores to see what you need to achieve your target grade.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my grade if my teacher uses weighted categories?
Switch to "Weighted Categories" mode. Enter each category name (e.g., Homework, Midterm, Final Exam), its weight percentage as listed on your syllabus, the points you earned, and the total points possible. The calculator will automatically compute your weighted percentage, letter grade, and GPA equivalent.
Do the category weights need to add up to 100%?
Ideally, yes. If your weights total 100%, your grade reflects the full course. If they total less than 100% (for example, if you have not entered all categories yet), the calculator still computes a result based on the categories entered, but a warning will be displayed. If your weights exceed 100%, you likely have an error in your weight values.
What grading scale does this calculator use?
This calculator uses the standard American grading scale: A+ (97-100), A (93-96), A- (90-92), B+ (87-89), B (83-86), B- (80-82), C+ (77-79), C (73-76), C- (70-72), D+ (67-69), D (63-66), D- (60-62), and F (0-59). The GPA values follow the standard 4.0 scale. Your school may use slightly different cutoffs.
Can I use this to figure out what I need on my final exam?
Yes. In weighted mode, enter your current grades for all completed categories. For your final exam category, try different "Points Earned" values while keeping "Points Possible" fixed. The results will update in real time, showing you exactly what exam score you need to reach your target grade.
Is my data private?
Absolutely. This grade calculator runs entirely in your web browser. No data is uploaded, no accounts are needed, and no cookies are used for tracking. Your grades and academic information never leave your device.
Does this calculator handle extra credit?
Yes. If you earned more points than the total possible (due to extra credit), simply enter the actual points earned. The calculator will compute a percentage above 100%, which will still map to the correct letter grade (A+ for anything 97% and above).
