How to Add Watermarks to Images
SmarterSources' watermark tool lets you add text or image watermarks to your photos to protect your work and establish ownership. Everything runs in your browser — your images are never uploaded to any server.
Text Watermarks
Add your name, business name, copyright notice, or any custom text as a watermark. Customize the font size, color, opacity, rotation angle, and position. For best results, use a semi-transparent white or black text with a slight rotation to make it harder to remove.
Image Watermarks
Upload your logo or any image as a watermark. Scale it to the right size and adjust the opacity so it's visible but doesn't overpower the photo. This is ideal for photographers and businesses with an established logo.
Tiled Watermarks
Select the "Tiled" layout to repeat your watermark across the entire image. This provides the strongest protection as it's nearly impossible to remove without damaging the image. Commonly used for stock photos, proofs, and previews.
Positioning
Use the 9-position grid to place your watermark exactly where you want it: corners, edges, or center. The bottom-right corner is the most common placement for single watermarks, while center works best for tiled patterns.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the watermark reduce image quality?
The watermark is composited onto the original image at full quality. The output uses the same format and quality as the original. The only change is the addition of the watermark overlay.
What's the best opacity for a watermark?
For protective watermarks, 30-50% opacity is the sweet spot — visible enough to prove ownership but not so heavy that it ruins the image. For decorative branding, 10-25% provides a subtle presence. For proof/preview images, 60-80% makes it clear the image isn't final.
Can I watermark multiple images at once?
Currently, this tool processes one image at a time. Batch watermarking is planned for a future update.
What file formats are supported?
The tool accepts PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, and BMP as input. Output is saved in the same format as the original to preserve quality.
Is the watermark permanent?
The watermark is baked into the output image pixels — it's not a separate layer that can be removed. However, with enough effort, subtle watermarks can be edited out by someone with image editing skills. Tiled watermarks at moderate opacity provide the strongest protection.
